IGNISTERRA has 15,000 hectares in Tierra del Fuego, where it has a self-sustaining energy industrial plant, which includes a modern sawmill, kiln drying facilities and a pre-processing plant, which has been in operation since 1992.
In addition the company has a manufacturing plant in Villa Alemana with more than a hundred types of equipment from manual machinery to CNC routers. In its industrial facilities IGNISTERRA has implemented the latest in cutting edge technology, which along with its highly qualified personnel and ISO 9001 management system, allows it to design and manufacture products with the highest level of quality.
Regarding environmental care, Ignisterra works with high standards of conservation and commitment, based on models of sustainable forest management. The wood is extracted from its own forests in Tierra del Fuego, through a responsible forestry management, authorized and controlled by CONAF (National Forest Corporation).
Forestry management consists in harvesting a controlled percentage of adult trees, allowing small trees to grow, receive sunlight and thus never disrupting the forest cycle.
In addition, it seeks to efficiently use all parts of the tree, this is done by cutting its wood in random widths and lengths as well as promoting the acceptance of natural characteristics of the wood, such as knots and color differences.
Since 2009 Ignisterra has been FSC® certified, making it a pioneer in Chilean certification of natural forests. With this, Ignisterra ensures an environmentally responsible forestry management, that it is socially beneficial and economically viable. In 2013, the company obtained the highest recognition in the Southern Summit by placing first as a sustainable export company, awarded by ProChile.
Finally, Ignisterra’s sawmill in Tierra del Fuego has a modern co-generator plant of sustainable biomass thermo and electric energy production, which allows it to sell Carbon Credits certified by the United Nations.
Lenga wood (Nothofagus pumilio), is a native species that grows exclusively in the South of Chile and Argentina, where its largest areas are found in the Chilean regions of Aysen and Magallanes, specifically in Patagonia and the island of Tierra del Fuego.
Lenga forests in Chile reach an area of 3.4 million hectares; about 33% of such surface is allowed for commercial use by Chilean law.
Lenga is known in many countries as Fireland or Patagonian Cherry for its similar grain and colors with American Cherry. Its sapwood is white to yellowish and its heartwood is pale pink to dark in color. It is considered worldwide as a hardwood that has excellent features for the furniture craftsmanship, such as carving, gluing, profiling, staining and finishing. In short, it is perfect for designs aiming to honor nature and allowing to obtain excellent and fine wood products.
A Lenga tree is adapted to grow in places with poor soils, cold weather and strong winds, where no other species grows. It is the foremost pioneer and in many places is the first species to grow after volcanic eruptions. This makes it a strong tree, thus not making it an endangered species.
Each piece of lenga is unique. Being a native wood, it has the peculiarities of natural forests where each piece has colors and unique grains designed by nature, with the passing of time. This is an advantage over wood from plantations where all trees are generally clones with the same characteristics. In addition, it is an exclusive product, since there are forests of lenga only in the extreme south of Argentina and Chile, and their sustainable forestry management requires a controlled productive volume.
